Fall Evening Open House

Thursday Sept. 29th 5:30-8:00 PM

Please join us for a complimentary fun, family evening with a concert and art showing supporting local artists.

The evening will include the wonderful music of Tim Flood Music, soulful and green art by Ocean Girl Art by Elise Nikole K, drinks and snacks, donation raffle and massage (procedes to support Surfrider Foundation) and a gathering of community.

Tim Flood Music

Tim Flood plays music from and for the soul. A versatile multi-instrumentalist with a special love for the guitar, Tim has been making music for more than 20 years. He composes and performs original compositions influenced by his love for nature, people, yoga and Love itself.

When not making music or practicing yoga, Flood can be found riding the waves and loving the Earth.

Ocean Girl Art by Elise Nikole K

Originally from the beaches of Texas, self taught artist Elise Nicole K. has recently moved her studio to sunny southern California after calling the isles of Hawai’i home for nearly 7 years. Gypsy at heart, Elise Nicole has traveled all over the world in search of inspiration and perfect waves. Elise’s paintings are the bubbly scenes we all wish we could melt into. Warm colors bring to life popular surf breaks and flowing long hair of a girl perfectly perched on the nose of a longboard or dancing hula. She paints generally without a plan and memories of salty play dates begin to emerge, something most of us can relate to. Elise Nicole strives to keep an Eco-conscious outlook and often uses elements from the earth, or reclaimed objects as her canvas; muscial sheets, wood, glass from old windows etc.

We look forward to spending the evening with you!

Proper hydration is crucial, which is why we constantly hear that people should be drinking 8-9 cups of water a day. However, what we may not hear as much is that most of that liquid water runs right through us. That’s just its nature – it either will sit on top of the contents of our stomachs or be processed as quickly as possible.

Foods that Hydrate

Because of the importance of hydration through foods, there are three foods that come to mind that both nourish our bodies and hydrate. Eating these either with water or before drinking can also help your body retain the hydration it needs before everything is flushed out. With proper hydration will come a better circulation, quicker expulsion of toxins, and better absorption of foods. It also means feeling better and having clearer mental functioning!

Number 1. Apples

Apples are not only a great source of fiber, but they also serve as a great source for hydration. All varieties contain about 70-80 percent water, making them a great choice for hydration. They’re also a great source of vitamin C and polyphenols. Plus, with tons of fiber, they help make you feel full. This is great if you’re looking to shed some extra pounds. Just remember, don’t go for pure apple juice – while this hydrates, you really benefit from the added “bulk” the fiber provides in the raw form. Unfortunately, juices just can’t contend with the real thing.

Number 2. Celery

Celery is an amazing 96 percent water – that’s a lot of hydration. This is why so many people enjoy eating it in the early afternoon as a pick me up – after all, fatigue and agitation are signs of dehydration. The vitamins K and C, among others, is a nice addition. And stuff it with some organic, unsweetened nut butter and you’ve added some protein too.

Number 3. Citrus Fruits

Finally, go for those fruits that are so juicy – citrus fruits! We’ve all had that experience of oranges exploding juice into our eyes. That alone tells you its hydration level. Try adding a orange during your lunch break or a grapefruit for breakfast (make sure to skip the sugar on top!). These tangy, sweet fruits will not only hydrate, but also help you with a proper vitamin intake , most notably vitamin C.

Drinking up and Feeling Great

With proper hydration comes a healthy body and acute mental awareness. When getting hydrated through healthy fruits and veggies, you’re also providing your body with great sources of nutrition.

Continue to think of hydrating you body not just with liquid - get it from your foods too with some well needed nutrients!

For example, beneficial insects (like ladybugs) rather than toxic chemicals are used to control pests such as aphids. The benefits of eating produce that was not sprayed with toxic chemicals extends beyond the consumer. Farmers that grow their produce using organic methods are not exposed to high concentrations of pesticides as their conventional counterparts. Also, the soil and our water supply is damaged and contaminated by conventional farming methods, not so with organic farms.

Most people would like to provide their families with pesticide and chemical-free food. However, we kow the cost of organic is higher, but well worth it in the long run.

While it may not be possible to go completely organic where you live, it is definitely reasonable to add organics to your families’ diet.

The following is a list of the foods most contaminated by pesticides. In order to protect your family from alarmingly high concentration of pesticides it is best to go organic when purchasing these items or substitute another item altogether. Most of these foods have thin skins so the pesticides are absorbed. Washing won’t remove these harmful chemicals which makes these foods particularly dangerous.

Breastfeeding can be a very new and unknown process for many new parents. Educating yourself on the facts can make it not so “unknown”.

Many times throughout the day we discuss basic breastfeeding with our practice members. We are always looking for other good, easy to read and concise resources and this one is good. We found this article from Peaceful Parenting that we wanted to share…check it out.

http://www.drmomma.org/2010/09/7-breastfeeding-facts-you-should-know.html

Breastfeeding is recommended by the American Pediatric Association and the World Health Organization as the sole source of nutrients exclusively for the first 6 months and recommended for the first year of life. The world Health Organization supports extended breastfeeding up to 2 years of age.

In our practice we have referrals from OB’s, Midwives, doulas, birth educators and lactation specialist for us to assist in proper alignment for latch, but an educated new mom and dad are so helpful and empowering for a calm, smooth transition breastfeeding.

We are so lucky that their are so many resources around breastfeeding now. Educating yourself around breastfeeding will allow you to feel more comfortable and ultimately be more successful.

Happy parenting:)

Getting into the new parent groove is a challenging one. We know that bliss when your baby falls off to sleep on a drive home. Looking down at them peacefully sleeping is a wonderful thing - and even better if you are having sleep challenges.

But - something to think about, along with the many times we have shared that wearing your baby is the best for everyone.

The Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics published a study that was completed in 2009 with newborns that show a decrease of oxygen level saturation of babies sleeping in their car seats.

check out the article: A Comparison of Respiratory Patterns in Healthy Term Infants Placed in Car Safety Seats and Beds –.

We always suggest wearing your baby for your body health, theirs and the bonding/emotional connection - but here supports another reason. Time to really leave the car seats in the cars…

Be well!

Meditation, in our eyes, is a beneficial practice to every person - no matter how much or how little stress you are under. The science studies are finally catching up to record and publish this amazing practice and its health benefits that many of us have seen in action.

In a study published in the January 30 edition of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers concluded that an eight week mindfulmeditation practice produced measurable changes in participants’ brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress. This is the first study to document meditation-produced changes in the brain’s grey matter over time.

“It is fascinating to see the brain’s plasticity and that, by practicing meditation, we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life,” Britta Holzel, PhD, first author of the paper and a research fellow at MGH and Giessen University in Germany, said in the press statement. “Other studies in different patient populations have shown that meditation can make significant improvements in a variety of symptoms, and we are now investigating the underlying mechanisms in the brain that facilitate this change.”

read the whole study : http://www.NaturalNews.com/z031228_meditation_brain.html

Remember - this study was based off an 8 week study of around 27 min a day of meditation. If you dont feel you have 27 min. a day though, do what you can and be intentful to work up to it, but dont be stressed about it either, some meditation is better than none! Your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it:)

Enjoy your “Me” time of meditation - you deserve it…

Namaste

In our office, we are encouraging our practice members to look at all aspects of their lives to better their health.

A balanced mind, body and spirit will create a healthy you.

Yoga is one form of exercise that has multiple returns. Not only are you increasing flexibility and stamina, toning muscle, increasing circulation and breath, but you are also causing an increase of relaxation hormones and learning calming mechanisms. The list really goes on and on.

We highly recommend finding the proper type and intensity of yoga that is suitable for you at this very moment dependent on your body health. Ask us to help find you a class or get you on a at home program. And remember - baby steps are good. Even starting an at home practice of a few specific asanas or for 15 min. a day is better than not starting at all.

Check out this article of 10 Reasons to Do Yoga that supports and might give you more ideas of the benefits.

http://www.spiritvoyage.com/blog/index.php/10-reasons-to-do-yoga/

Be very well!

Namaste

As the final days of 2010 approach, I’m sure that everyone is thinking about their “New Years Resolutions”.

For many people setting these “resolutions” works and the outcomes are positive. Unfortunately for many others it means feeling bad about themselves that they have not attained or stuck to the things that they wanted to do.

Our advise: set attainable INTENTIONS or goals that are realistic.

Setting goals or intentions that are unrealistic for you to do or complete does not serve you or those around you in any positive way. We need and want to feel good about ourselves. That’s the first step in creating a healthy mind, body and productive life!

We also just read something that we loved that we wanted to share with you. Changing your wordage from New Years Resolution to your NOW YEAR Resolution! And even better wordage for us still is your NOW YEAR INTENTION. Our reason you ask?

The definition of NEW is: been made or acquired or discovered.

The definition of NOW is: at the present time; at this moment; at once

NOW represents THIS moment and feels more concrete to your mind. Not something you have “acquired or discovered” like the meaning of “new”. NOW is intergrated into your life. Its not something that you are trying to attain, its already there!

and resolution vs. intention?

The definition of RESOLUTION: A firm decision.

The definition of INTENTION: A course of action that one intends to follow.

A resolution is a great first step but by setting an intention you are actually acting on that choice to make changes.

Yes, we know that many people think this is only a play on words. But words are a powerful tool for our mind. What we think we are and what we think we are not - we are!

Thinking about the changes you desire in 2011 is a healthy, productive way to start the new year. Just remember to make them realistic so they can be attained but challenging enough so that you do create change in your life. And baby steps are good too:) Small changes can make huge impact on your life and those around you. Set yourself up for success and build on that throughout the year. Intentions should not only be set in January - make it part of your monthly thought process.

So have fun setting some NOW INTENTIONS for 2011 - we wish you many blessings and love for a fun, creative process!

Namaste

And check back with our blog throughout the month of January for more on 2011 intentions. This is Part 1. We will be discussing some ideas on intention setting regarding you, your health, our environment and family!

by Lori Deschene

“Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.” ~Sophia Loren

Even though I got Joey McIntyre of The New Kids on the Block to sign my scoliosis back brace in the sixth grade, I still felt ugly wearing it.

I didn’t realize the irony back then, but in retrospect it’s a little funny I grew crooked considering I convinced myself I was wilting in my sister’s shadow. (I also had braces and headgear, but that’s another story.)

I was a kid who wanted to be beautiful, but more desperately wanted to feel loved. My self esteem increased through the years, but I never quite shook the sneaking suspicion I’d be never be beautiful enough. Or maybe lovable enough.

It would be easy to blame it all on society and the Kate Moss era of modeling, but I think it’s more than that. I just never learned to notice and appreciate all the beautiful things about myself. The stuff that has nothing to do with my waistline, skin tone or eye lashes and everything to do with who I am.

I never learned to give myself the credit for all the good I do in the world. I was too busy cataloging my weaknesses, mistakes, and flaws to recognize it.

It seems like such a cliche to say pretty is as pretty does, but the truth is physical beauty is subjective. And no matter how closely someone matches your ideal of physical perfection, that will eventually fade. What endures are the qualities, passions, and habits we nurture.

That’s what makes us beautiful–and believe me when I say there is something beautiful in everyone. If you’ve done any of the following lately, you are absolutely beautiful:

1. Smile. As the quote goes, “I’ve never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful.”

2. Be there for someone who needs you even if there’s nothing in it for you–give without expectations.

3. Make a sacrifice for someone you love.

4. Admit a mistake, even if it’s hard to say you’re wrong, and work to make amends.

5. Share your struggles, putting your ego aside, to make someone else feel less alone.

6. Create something that helps people. A song, a blog, a support group, a non-profit–anything that inspires.

7. Help a child feel good about him or herself.

8. Tell someone what you appreciate about them, even if you feel vulnerable.

9. Forgive someone without needing to hear the words, “I’m sorry.”

10. Give someone an uncomfortably long hug when they need it.

10. Create positive energy around you by thinking positive thoughts and acting with positive intentions.

11. Sit with reality without judging anyone or anything.

12. Accept someone for who they are instead of trying to change them to who you want them to be.

13. Treat people like you want to be treated.

14. Notice something simple but beautiful in the world around you.

15. Acknowledge the beauty in others, instead of feeling threatened or competing with other people.

16. Be the change you want to see in the world, as per Gandhi’s suggestion.

17. Tap into your personal power and do something that makes a difference in the world.

18. Find strength in a challenging moment. It’s not easy to do, and you deserve credit for it.

19. Talk kindly about the world around you instead of gossiping or complaining.

20. Forget yourself for a minute and do nothing but listen to someone who needs it.

21. Measure a person by their best moments, not their worst.

22. Give yourself the same courtesy–focus on the good you’ve done, not the mistakes you’ve made.

23. Take the high road when someone hurts you instead if being cruel or catty.

24. Make someone laugh. A smile can literally melt stress and pain away. How beautiful of you to do that for someone else!

25. Make someone cry–tears of joy that is. People want to feel moved, inspired, motivated. Never underestimate the power of touching someone’s heart.

26. Keep an open mind instead of sticking with a judgment or assumption.

27. Love what you’re tempted to fear.

28. Be the voice of optimism when the people around you need it badly.

29. Show humility when your accomplishments would make it easy to stand above people.

30. Handle rejection or failure with grace. It’s far more easily said than done–and it sounds so cheesy and cliche–but accepting loss gracefully makes you a true winner.

31. Show unbridled enthusiasm for something that excites you. All children are beautiful, and I think their unadulterated joy has a lot to do with it.

32. Hear what someone means, not just what they say. Anyone can nitpick. Not everyone actively works to be understanding.

33. Imagine a world where people know peace, and do one small thing to create it.

34. Honor the values that matter to you. Showing integrity is the first step to feeling good about yourself.

35. Accept and love yourself–or as Ben Folds sings, “Learn to live with what you are.”

And now a disclaimer: some days you may not do anything written above–in fact, you might do the exact opposite. On those days you are still beautiful.

There are times when, like Alexander, I’m having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Times when it seems like I might get swept into the tornado of chaos around me. Times when the voice in my head is unkind, and I interpret everything that happens through a negative filter. When I think the worst of people and complain about it; when I expect the worst of my day and lament it.

This admission might seem like the biggest possible acknowledgment of hypocrisy, but I have nothing to give if not my honesty. And the reality is I am imperfect. We all are. We all have moments of weakness–but they’ll only define us if they far surpass moments of kindness, compassion, love, and strength.

Being beautiful doesn’t mean adhering to some picture-perfect fantasy, or living every moment that way. It means realizing this moment is a new opportunity to be who you want to be, and making the effort to seize it.

How will you be beautiful today?
